{"id":8645,"date":"2019-10-15T13:22:54","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T19:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/traderiskguaranty.com\/trgpeak\/?p=8645"},"modified":"2021-07-12T15:05:28","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T21:05:28","slug":"new-research-shows-spike-maritime-sanctions-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/traderiskguaranty.com\/trgpeak\/new-research-shows-spike-maritime-sanctions-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"New Research Shows Spike in Maritime Sanctions in 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>New data reveals a major spike in maritime sanctions over the last year, demonstrating the impact of an ever-changing international trading environment.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s always been critical that your company\u2019s bonded cargo paperwork is accurate and complete, but if you\u2019ve noticed increased scrutiny by U.S. officials over the last year, you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to research by financial risk assessment firm Accuity, sanctions against maritime vessels <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtreview.com\/news\/global\/new-data-shows-spike-in-sanctions-issued-against-maritime-vessels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have increased as much as 164%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the last year &#8211; a startling statistic for those operating in international trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which operates under the umbrella of the Department of Treasury, has increased its list of sanctions 37% overall from July 2018 to July 2019, but shipping vessels have seen the most scrutiny during this period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to their importance to the continuous flow of goods via international trade, vessels are a likely target for authorities if their cargo, country of origin, or destination raises red flags. But with the recent round of sanctions against the Dailian subsidiary of China\u2019s COSCO, one of the world\u2019s largest shipping conglomerates, the level of confusion &#8211; and reason for concern &#8211; have risen rapidly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market has responded in kind. With the sanctions in place and another round of attacks on Middle Eastern tankers, daily rates for VLCCs (very large crude carriers) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradewindsnews.com\/tankers\/vlcc-rates-smash-300-000-per-day-after-latest-middle-east-tanker-attack\/2-1-687278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have reportedly risen to $300,000 per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Individual bookings are being estimated at much higher levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OFAC has been slow to identify sanctioned ships and charterers have responded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/sanctions-are-cleaving-the-global-shipping-fleet-in-two\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoiding any vessel that could conceivably become sanctioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But even then, ships that enter sanctioned territorial waters by accident can result in sanctions against both the vessel and the companies with goods onboard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While last week spurred optimism in the form of a handshake agreement to a truce in the trade war between China and the United States, the former has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/china-wants-more-talks-before-signing-trade-deal-with-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pumped the brakes in recent days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying they want to hold more talks in order to nail down the details of a \u201cphase one\u201d deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a two-day meeting in Washington, both sides came to a temporary agreement to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2019\/oct\/11\/us-delays-china-tariff-increase-as-trump-cites-warmer-feelings-in-talks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delay an increase to 30% on nearly $250 billion in goods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that was to take effect on October 15th &#8211; a move that saw positive market response in both the United States and China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanctions on Chinese cargo vessels, however, have not been lifted. It\u2019s unclear whether the results of the ongoing negotiations will impact the existing sanctions &#8211; and increased scrutiny by the U.S. &#8211; of inbound vessels, but needless to say, those operating in international trade should continue to follow closely and move carefully as the standoff between these two economic giants continues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New data reveals a major spike in maritime sanctions over the last year, demonstrating the impact of an ever-changing international trading environment.
